MEMRO 2009

The three international airports closest to Stanford University are: 1) San Francisco (SFO), 2) San Jose (SJC), and 3) Oakland (OAK). A number of airlines fly directly to these airports from Asia, Europe, Africa and other places, or connect through most major US cities. Both SFO and SJC are about equidistant to the campus although SFO is the larger airport with more amenities. You do not need to rent a car during the meeting.
1) SFO to Stanford Area: There are three basic ways to get to the campus area. a) Taxi/cab - this the fastest but the most expensive method. It should take about 30 mins and cost about $80. b) Shuttle bus - this will run anywhere from 45 mins to 1 hour and cost about $40. c) Public transportation - cheapest but a little bit slower. Should cost about $8 and takes about 45 min (plus connection time). Take the BART train system (~15 mins, $1.50) from the International Terminal to Millbrae Station. From there switch to the Southbound CalTrain (~30 mins, $6) and get off at the Palo Alto Station. If you take the train do watch your surroundings. If you arrive in the evening, taking the train is not recommended.
2) SJC to Stanford Area: Here there two options. a) Taxi/cab - fastest but most expensive. It should take about 40 mins and cost about $60. b) Shuttle bus - this will take anywhere from 50 min to 1 1/2 hours and cost about $40.
3) OAK to Stanford Area: This is an alternate option to explore for better connection than SFO or SJC. But it is significantly further away (about 1 hour by car). Taxi and Shuttle busses are the only real options.
One recommendation for a taxi service is Airport Gold Taxi Cab Limo. You can call ahead (650-856-1600) a day in advance, or from inside the airport when you land, to make an appointment.
